A life threatening medical emergency can occur anywhere, to
anyone, at any time. Furthermore, due to the increased anxiety and stress
typically related with dental treatment, the chance of a medical emergency
developing during dental treatment increases significantly.
Dental professionals should know what to do automatically.
Implementation of an “in-office response team” plus the recommendations of
critical drugs and equipment will be reviewed.

Medical History, Prevention of Medical Emergencies, Recognizing
common medical emergencies:
altered consciousness, convulsions, respiratory distress, drug-related
distress and chest pain,
Rapid
Patient Assessment, Emergency Medical Services, the “Team
Approach”
to handle emergency, Treatment Modalities available to the dental staff:
Basic Life Support, oxygen therapy, the
AED,
and assisting the patient with their Rx,
Stocking a Medical Emergency Kit for the dental office

SPEAKER:
MICHAEL L. MOONEY, MICP, BBA
is
a graduate of Temple University. He has over 28 years experience in
Emergency Medical Services. As a clinical education specialist with a major
N.J. health system, he conducted training for all levels of medicine,
including physicians, dentists, dental staff, nurses and first responders.
He is currently employed at the National Center of the American Heart
Association in Dallas, TX as a National Field Consultant for Emergency
Cardiovascular Care Programs.

MAXIMIZING ULTRASONIC THERAPY

The study of biofilm and the systemic link has initiated a
paradigm shift in ultrasonic application. This course is designed to examine
the role that ultrasonics play in contemporary periodontal therapeutics, as
well as the rationale of hand scaling versus power scaling.
Discussion of magnetostrictive technology will be explored, with emphasis on
piezoelectric technology. Helpful aids for periodontal therapy such as
magnification, electroanalgesia, periodontal gels and aerosol reduction
will be addressed.

COLLEEN RUTLEDGE, RDH
received her in Dental Hygiene degree from Coastal Carolina
College, NC. She is a member of ADHA and PDHA. Colleen enjoys a
multi-faceted career consulting in private practice and practicing
clinically in a periodontal setting. Colleen presents her continuing
education courses nationally and is the owner of
“Perio-Therapeutics & Beyond”,
a consulting & public speaking business.
